Vy's review of OoP Movie.
NOTE: MAJOR
SPOILER ALERT FOR MOVIE OoP. DO NOT CONTINUE IF YOU
DON'T WANT TO
KNOW ABOUT THE MOVIE!
Okay. I have to say I was NOT impressed with the movie. Too many things were changed. Too many things were cut. And this is even before I get into the acting.
First of all, any movie needs to be able to stand alone. Not everyone is a Harry Potter fan. Not everyone reads the books. The plot of the movie was unclear. Things jumped around without much of an explanation. Trying to think about it from a non-book reader point of view, I'd be lost. Things just jumped into the story and you don't get back info so to speak. Any good movie that's a sequel should be able to stand alone. OoP can't. You have to have watched the previous movies to really get some of the story involved, understand why some people were acting 'weird'. DD mainly.
SS/PS, CoS, PoA and GOF are all able to stand alone, yet they are all Books 1, 2, 3, and 4 of a 7 book series. You can watch and understand the plot without knowing about the book/other movies. Other great movies with multiple parts are all able to stand alone: Star Wars, Star Trek, Matrix, Nightmare on Elm Street, Jason, Godfather, etc.
Of the changed things or cut:
Cho's betrayal was the worse of the lot. If she really was under the Veritaserum as the movie implies then 1. I reckon the group would have been more understanding, 2. She wouldn't of joined the Inquisitorial Squad (I may be wrong on this but wasn't she in Umbridge's office holding someone back when the 6 were in there.) I will need to borrow's someone's DVD to confirm this when it comes out (No, I will not be adding this movie to my collection).
And speaking of Veritaserum, would everyone in DA have realized that the 'tea' was spiked and not drink any of it? Or could everyone in DA have gotten away with not drinking any of it?
And the decrees.. That was so overdone it wasn't funny. Educational Decree number 79?! HELLO! I don't think so.
No Quidditch. Enough said.
Ron, Hermione as Prefects weren't mentioned.
Harry and Cho. From a few stolen glances to Cho staring at a picture of Cedric and crying to kissing Harry?! It made Harry look very insensitive to Cho being a well....
The fact that they made it out like Luna and Harry being a couple?! No, SO NOT right.
And the scene where they take the thestrals to MoM. Ron, Ginny and Hermione couldn't of seen them.
Grawp seemed too 'friendly'. Giant's are suppose to be fierce creatures.
Hagrid just TELLS HRH (Harry, Ron, Hermione) about his trip?
Figgs. She has always been at Privet Drive. It seems as if she just appeared and moved there between movie 4 and 5.
Arthur was bitten OUTSIDE the room with the prophecies.. NOT inside. And the lack of concern the Weasley's had on their father being bitten was just wrong.
Battle at MoM: Did it seem to anyone else that Voldemort and the OoP came out from the arch?!
Yes, I know I jumped around but I'm typing as they come into my head. (I knew I should have written this yesterday while the movie was still fresh in my head.
And onto the acting. Which I think was not just bad but abysmal. And I'm not talking about the minor characters either. I'm speaking of HRH. I don't know if it's just me. But as they are growing older in the real world, they are also losing their natural innocence that came out on the screen in the previous movies. They are learning more about themselves in the real world and when they get back to acting as HRH, it's just not the same.
You don't get to see Tonks enough to understand her being a metamorphmagus. Heck, you don't even realized who she is at all in the movie. She's just someone who's there. Same with Kingsley, Lupin, Mad-Eye and even McGonagall.
I will say even though I didn't see much of what was in my head in the pictures of Umbridge, she's was too bad playing her character. Not the best, but not too bad. But she was portrayed more as the main villain then Voldemort. What was with that?
And Luna, though fairly well played by who ever the actress was, I still imagined her a bit more dumpier. So, she could have been better cast.
Okay.. that's some of my faults I found with the movie.
This is not to say ALL of it was bad. The final battle at the MoM was pretty well done actually (excepting all the cuts and changes). But, when you look at the backdrops, sets, etc that went into that battle and compare them to the rest of the movie, it seems as if they spent ALL their budget on those scenes at MoM and forgot they had an actual movie to make and just made do with what they had.
And before this turns into a book itself, I'm going to cut myself off. :) And now you have my opinion of the movie.
OH.. Either Sirius or DD WILL be back in some form or another this is not to say they aren't dead. :)
The one thing that stuck in my head was Luna still saying in the movie that things always come back.. even if not in the form we expect. :)

I agree with you on many aspects of your review, but one thing you said is bothering me. Luna and Harry as a couple? They certainly didn't depict that. Yes, I am aware that Luna grabbed Harry's hand for a minute near the end, but I am also aware that holding a person's hand does not always mean romantic feelings exist between the two. Harry's godfather just DIED. She was offering him comfort and understanding.
I agree with other parts of your review, but I had to comment on that.

I realize that Ginny gives a few dirty looks with Cho and stuff, but it just seems throughout the movie Luna and Harry got closer while everyone else. was just there. Forget the hand holding .. but more the intimacy of sharing their losses. Either or. Each is entitled to his/her opinions. :)
