It's HOT, Damn HOT!

Here in Sydney today, 12.10 pm on Thursday January 15, 2009 it is 40 degrees Celsius.

It is so hot, the grass is wilting. Due to water restrictions, it can only be watered twice a week - not that it is advisable to water it in the middle of the day.

I start work in 1 hour and 20 minutes and I have a 30 minute drive ahead of me... For some reason, I am very reluctant to leave the confines of my 22 degree air-conditioned home...funny that!

Thunderstorms are predicted for tonight, but there is no sign of that right now....

The only saving grace is that the heat is dry...normally Sydney is plagued by very high humidity in Summer....not today, though...but should the clouds roll in, that will change in a flash.

I know you in the Northern Hemisphere may envy the warmth at the moment - trust me, we are envying your coolness. Guess we can never win.

Come on Autumn, I say.......

Reply To Denni's scattered curiousities

What was the first book that left a lasting impression?

The Hobbit

Which book would you recommend to a teenager reluctant to try literature?

Ice Station by Matthew Reilly (Non-stop action!)

When was the last time you laughed?

Good belly laugh? About 1 hour ago at work. Subject: Not reprintable!!!

Which contemporary author do you think will still be read in 100 years time?

Michael Crichton

What were you doing at 8 am today?

At work, sorting staffing issues in ICU

Flip to page 21, paragraph 2 in the book closest to you right now, what does it say?

"Published research on skill mix has examined the substitution of one grade of staff with a lesser skilled, trained, or experienced grade of staff..." etc etc etc.

(It's a textbook!)

What is the most romantic thing a girl/guy has ever done for you?

My husband filled me a  bathtub with bubbles, lit candles, scattered rose petals, and played jazz music - then disappeared with the kids so I could just lay back and enjoy!!!

If you could invite three fictional couples to your own house for dinner, who would they be?

Hmmm, maybe Arthur & Guinevere, Lincoln Rhyme and Amelia Sachs (from Jeffrey Deaver's novels), and Homer & Marge Simpson!

Do you sleep with your bedroom door open or closed?

Hmmm, mostly open...but sometimes closed (wink!)

What is your current desktop picture?

Photograph's of Paris (from my recent European trip!)

What to do???

My husband is away. My son is away. My daughter is away. My other daughter is on a sleep-over until Sunday.

I have two nights purely on my own. What do I do???

I haven't experienced this for more years than I care to remember. Do I go out? Do I curl up and read??? Hmmm the decisions...

Does anyone have a suggestion as to what I can do, in Sydney, on a Friday night???

Better hurry though, it is almost Saturday morning!!!

Shift work

You know, after 27 years you would think it would dawn upon me that shiftwork is no good for you. I am a nurse. Shiftwork is a part of my working life, as hospitals are open 24/7. I am , ahem, senior enough that I can demand, and expect that I will not be rostered to work over the weekend. I also do not work nightshift (10pm to 8am). I do work, however, a variety of shifts commencing from morning to evening, and we are very short staffed and busy at the moment that we are working double shifts several times per week. Great for the pay packet (and the taxman) but not so good for the personal life, and really, I do not need the money. I work because I like it and I am good at it. I also like being at home with my family. When will the bureaucrats realise that more money needs to be injected into the health system to enable the training and recruitment of more staff???

OK, yet another rant from me...

I love my job, really!!!

Likes and Dislikes...

I Like:

Curling up with a crime novel on a cold rainy day;

My home made lasagne;

The sound of kids laughing, and mischief making;

Old Jamaica chocolate;

Monty, my dog, asleep on my lap, chasing rabbits;

Good manners;

Friends, family and a lively conversation;

Laughing;

A hug when I'm feeling low, and 'just because';

Winter.

I Don't Like:

Pretentiousness;

Passive-aggressive people;

"Arty" movies;

Bigotry;

Grapefruit, nor offal such as liver, tripe or kidney;

Sad songs that touch a nerve;

Nightmares;

Being alone.
